چکیده

We present Hubble Space Telescope imaging and spectroscopic observations of three Brightest Cluster Galaxies, Abell 1836-BCG, Abell 2052-BCG, and Abell 3565-BCG, obtained with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2, the Advanced Camera for Surveys and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. The data provide detailed information on the structure and mass profile of the stellar component, the dust optical depth, and the spatial distribution and kinematics of the ionized gas within the innermost region of each galaxy. Dynamical models, which account for the observed stellar mass profile and include the contribution of a central supermassive black hole (SBH), are constructed to reproduce the kinematics derived from the Hα and [N II]λλ6548,6583 emission lines. Secure SBH detection with M• = 3.61 +0.41 −0.50 × 10 9 M⊙ and M• = 1.34 +0.21 −0.19 × 10 9 M⊙, respectively, are obtained for Abell 1836-BCG and Abell 3565-BCG, which show regular rotation curves and strong central velocity gradients. In the case of Abell 2052-BCG, the lack of an orderly rotational motion prevents a secure determination, although an upper limit of M• . 4.60× 10 9 M⊙ can be placed on the mass of the central SBH. These measurements represent an important step forward in the characterization of the high-mass end of the SBH mass function. The evolution of massive black hole seeds

We investigate the evolution of high-redshift seed black hole masses at late times and their observational signatures. The massive black hole seeds studied here form at extremely high redshifts from the direct collapse of pre-galactic gas discs. Populating dark matter haloes with seeds formed in this way, we follow the mass assembly of these black holes to the present time using a Monte Carlo m...

A sample of radio galaxies spanning three decades in radio luminosity - I. The host-galaxy properties and black-hole masses

The results of analysis of HST I−band imaging of a sample of 41 radio galaxies spanning three orders of magnitude in radio luminosity at redshift z ≃ 0.5 are presented. These results represent the first stage in a coordinated programme to study the connection between radio luminosity and host-galaxy properties, black-hole masses and cluster environments in radio galaxies spanning a wide range i...

Evaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies

The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...

Is there an upper limit to black hole masses ?

We make a case for the existence for ultra-massive black holes (UMBHs) in the Universe, but argue that there exists a likely upper limit to black hole masses of the order of M ∼ 1010M⊙. We show that there are three strong lines of argument that predicate the existence of UMBHs: (i) expected as a natural extension of the observed black hole mass bulge luminosity relation, when extrapolated to th...

Luminosity Dependence in the Fundamental Plane Projections of Elliptical Galaxies

We analyze the fundamental plane projections of elliptical galaxies as a function of luminosity, using a sample of ≈ 80, 000 galaxies drawn from Data Release 4 (DR4) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We separate brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) from our main sample and reanalyze their photometry due to a problem with the default pipeline sky subtraction for BCGs. The observables we consi...
